American Association of Neurological Surgeons Names John A. Wilson, MD, FAANS, as Organization’s President-Elect

John A. Wilson, MD, FAANS, will serve as the 2019-2020 president-elect of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), the organization announced during the 2019 AANS Annual Scientific Meeting, in San Diego, April 13-17, 2019.

Dr. Wilson began neurosurgical practice in Pittsburgh at Allegheny General Hospital. In 1993, he was recruited to the neurosurgical faculty at Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston Salem, N.C. Since then, he has practiced neurosurgery at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center where he is the David L. and Sally Kelly Professor and vice chair in the department of neurological surgery as well as the co-director of the Neuroscience Service Line. His practice focuses primarily on cerebrovascular and skull base disorders.

“It is an honor to have been elected by my peers to serve the AANS membership as its president-elect. Over the last three years as Treasurer, I was privileged to work with the dedicated and hard-working volunteer physician leadership of the AANS as well as our terrific staff and executive leadership. As president-elect of the organization, I will strive to serve our members and work with our great team to advance the goals of the organization at the national and international level,” Dr. Wilson commented.

Dr. Wilson has served as an advisor to the North Carolina state Medicare Carrier Advisory Committee and the national Medicare Coverage Advisory Committee. Dr. Wilson has served as an officer in a numerous national and regional societies, including: president of the North Carolina Neurosurgical Society; president of the Southern Neurosurgical Society; president of the Society of University Neurosurgeons (SUN); chair of the AANS and Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS) Cerebrovascular Section; and chair of the AANS/CNS Washington Committee.
