As per the recently conducted laboratory studies, toothpastes containing zinc or stannous and mouthwash formulas with cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) are capable to neutralizing the virus that causes COVID-19 by nearly 99.9 percent.
These studies were part of a research program by toothpaste brand Colgate which included clinical studies among infected people to check effectiveness of oral care products in bringing down the amount of the virus in the mouth. They were conducted in partnership with Rutgers New Jersey Medical School’s (NJMS) Public Health Research Institute and Regional Biosafety Laboratories.
According to the study, toothpastes like Colgate Total and Meridol were successful in neutralizing 99.9 percent of the virus after two minutes of contact, while mouthwashes Colgate Plax and Colgate Total also managed to do the same but in just 30 seconds.
The final conclusion of these studies suggests that few toothpastes and mouthwashes may help in reducing the spread of SARS-CoV-2, by reducing the amount of virus in the mouth on temporary basis.
