The immune system is a very important part of the human body as it is the main body responsible to maintain the health of the body while keeping alien particles outside. Keeping the immune system effective and healthy is done through the intake of regular nutrients and minerals. One main mineral that needs to be absorbed by the body is Vitamin D which is essential for many different uses including the strength of bones.
However, a recent study conducted by a team of scientists was focusing on finding the different benefits and effects of Vitamin D on the human body. The main observations were seen in the immune system where Vitamin D might be responsible for the rate of the body to be engaged with diseases including multiple sclerosis.
The only mean of intake of vitamin D is through sunlight. Even though it is mostly found on skin and in bones, it has been discovered to move around the immune system. The study showed that vitamin D affects the activation of T cells through a process that occurs in the body that initiates dendritic cells. Vitamin D will affect a substance called CD31 which is responsible for the activation of the T cells.
The study was led by a professor at the University of Edinburgh’s Centre for Inflammation Research called Richard Mellanby. Dr. Richard commented on his findings saying, “Low vitamin D status has long being implicated as a significant risk factor for the development of several autoimmune diseases. Our study reveals one way in which vitamin D metabolites can dramatically influence the immune system.”
